Six-lined Racerunner

This extraordinary lizard is a Six-lined Racerunner (Aspidoscelis sexlineata). Race it does, allegedly being able to hit 18 mph. We can attest that they are fast. I'm at the Nature Conservancy's Kankakee Sands Preserve in NW Indiana. The Racerunner was a species we wanted to photograph but didn't have high expectations of doing so. It's one of a number of interesting species that we've found, and I've still got a day and a half to go. Thanks to site manager Trevor Edmonson for his hospitality, and for mothing with us the past two nights. John Howard, Laura Hughes, and Linda Romine came up Sunday, but had to head back this afternoon. As always, they found many cool things.

I'll post some meatier fare from this epic trip when time allows.
