Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day, February 2. A beautiful buck, photographed last summer in the wilds of Ashtabula County. An excellent mammal, worthy of our respect and the holiday that honors it.
We used to have three apple trees in our backyard, and we would let the fruit drop for the enjoyment of the wildlife, since we didn't use pesticides. One summer an industrious groundhog gathered a bunch of apples and piled them in a pyramid at the base of one of the trees!
